I've been working for a while on a few side projects. This one means a lot to me. I've always been a bit of a collector. Little rocks, fossils, feathers, bones... I love to photograph the things I gather, and recently decided, along with a good friend, to put together some collections for others. I have a few up in our shop, and several more to come. I noticed that there is a trend of using specimens and botanical elements in decorating lately. I'm happy to say that I already do it.
The crow and the pumpkin aren't normally there, they are seasonal, but usually my piano has some arrangement of this type of stuff on it.

When is the perfect time?

I read a post recently here. It made me think about how many times I personally have put off getting portraits taken. The photo above is about 3 years old. It isn't really that flattering for me. But look at my girls. They look happy. I look happy- but I remember what my thought was as my husband snapped the photo.

I thought, "Oh god I look awful. Hair up, no makeup, huge hoodie, bad angle."

In 20 years, will my girls look at this and think, wow mom looks so bad? Or will they try to remember that day? The day when we all played out in the yard and they crawled all over me?

I'm glad I have this photo. There are so few of my kids with me. I have very few photographs of me with my mother. It's unfortunate.

The photo below is 2 years old. The last image that has us all in it. I took it with a self timer. It's hilarious. But I love it anyway.

So, I suggest that you make an appointment to have your family portrait taken. It doesn't matter if it's with me or with another photographer. Even if it's at Portrait Innovations or Sears or whatever.

Your kids will thank you later. They love you. They think you are amazing and beautiful.

Love this sign! and this polaroid!!
The neptune inn is where I have stayed during my last two visits to Fort Myers Beach.
They have redone the whole thing and it is so awesome. It is small and lovely (unlike those high rise hotels that I despise), and right on the beach. Our patio looked right out over the water.

We really enjoyed our time on the beach. We got to see dolphins and sting rays and pelicans and starfish and crabs... I need to figure out how to set up a cottage on the beach so we can go back all the time. :)

I have a serious thing for vintage owls. My kitchen is full of them. I think my husband puts up with them because at least they are mostly contained to one room- instead of taking over the whole house. Luckily, I have super tacky honey oak cabinets that lend to the 70s feeling of my owl decor. It's quirky, it's kitschy, it's fun. And when I decide to change it (maybe never) I will have a ton of cool owl stuff to save for my kids. What are your decorating weaknesses?

This photo was on the front page of Etsy this morning. That was a cool thing to see when I first logged in. Etsy has been a satisfying venue for me for a few years now. My thing for cowls.

Up there is my girl in a lovely cowl I made in my favorite color yarn. I think it is something simple by red heart- but I can't find it on line anywhere. I am going to list this in my owl and fawn shop in a few minutes. I always sit down with an idea to make a new hat or fingerless gloves or a scarf, but I end up making cowls. I just love them!! Mireio is one of my favorite etsy shops ever. i am in love with her lavender pillows and sachets. This one in particular caught my eye. As you all know, I have a weakness for birds. This little sachet is made from vintage fabric and adorned with vintage buttons. Love!!

Thundersnow...

This isn't a great photo (I opened the front door a tiny bit and snapped)... but, I wanted to write a bit about the amazing storm we're having here and I couldn't possibly blog without a photo. : )
So... as you may know, I live in the midwest , and right now there is a blizzard on top of us. I like weather. I am sort of geeky. I have been looking outside throughout the day watching the snow swirl into drifts around our house... and just a while ago, there was a flash of light- and then... thunder! We are having what is called Thundersnow. I haven't heard thunder during a snowstorm since I was a kid. How cool!

I have had the same dining room table for 10 years now. I love it. I need to be realistic though, it is really falling apart. It is raw wood, and the surface is very ... um... well loved. So much so that I painted the top white so it wouldn't look so gross- er- I mean, weathered. I have constantly had my eyes open for just the right table. Haven't found one yet. I like the one above, but sadly I have a big family, and that wouldn't work.
I considered countertop height tables, but then worried about my little one falling out of the chairs... I really love all the modern bar stools I have looked at recently, but the table!! I need to buckle down and find one. Maybe soon one will jump out at me.

Perhaps the first things I should say are these... no I am not currently pregnant. no I was not pregnant with twins. and yes, that was really me, at 37 weeks pregnant.
I was thinking back to what it felt like to be pregnant... all excited about the new baby... girl or boy?... buying baby things... and so I decided to inject myself with a dose of reality. By nature- and genetics I suppose, I happen to get really REALLY large during pregnancy. Even only having gained 40 pounds with my little boy, the weight seemed to hit 3 main spots. Boobs, Belly, and Butt. I was 53 inches around the waist when this was taken. Yeah. NOT COMFY!!
I wouldn't trade my little man for a ticket to all the carnivals in the world, but seriously why couldn't I have been one of those amazingly cute gals with the normal body with a little basketball under their shirts?
Just sayin' ...

At my daughter's request, I applied these nails for her. I am having serious mixed emotions about my 8 year old wearing these. She swears that all the other girls wear them in school. Is this normal?? My 11 year old chews her nails off, so that isn't an issue. I mean, they look pretty- I guess- but she's 8!!! Any thoughts??
